Why India Is a Top Wildlife Safari Destination

India is a top wildlife safari destination for nature lovers. These are the key points of attraction.

    • The country has a rich biodiversity. Almost 7% to 8% of the Earth’s known species can be found there.
    • There are 4 major biodiversity hotspots in the country, including the Himalayas, the Northeast, Western Ghats, and the Nicobar Islands.
    • Landscapes range from tropical forests and sand dunes to mangroves and snow caps.
    • The country has an extensive network of more than 560 wildlife sanctuaries and 100 national parks.
    • Protected habitats feature iconic species like the Asiatic lion, Bengal tiger, One-horned rhinoceros, Snow leopard, and Indian elephant.

Top 7 Wildlife Safaris in India You Shouldn’t Miss

Here are the top wildlife safaris to consider in India.

    • Jim Corbett National Park, Uttarakhand

This is the oldest national park in India, which was established in 1936. The park is known for the diversity of the wildlife it supports. Sighting leopards, tigers, and elephants is common there.

You can enjoy a safari by jeep, canter, or even on foot. In general, you will find the park open during the months between November and June. Zones like Dhikala and Bijrani can be accessed only during tour seasons, while Dhela and Jhirna are accessible all year.

    • Ranthambore National Park, Rajasthan

This is a great destination for tourists who are particularly fond of Royal Bengal Tigers. The chances of spotting a tiger are the highest during the cooler months between October and April. The park also attracts history enthusiasts and landscape explorers with its fort ruins and lush forests.

You will find abundant wildlife in the park, which will create a rich safari experience for you. It is also a preferred place for nature photography and wildlife documentary recording for many.

    • Kaziranga National Park, Assam

This is the best place to spot One-Horned Rhinoceroses. But that’s not all. Your safari will also help you spot Wild Water Buffalo and Hoolock Gibbons. Your safari options in the park include jeep and elephant-back rides. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The best time to experience the park is between November and April. You will find the perfect weather for wildlife and bird watching. Cooler months are also great for spotting migratory birds. But the park remains closed during the heavy monsoon months from May to October, due to the risk of Brahmaputra River flooding.

    • Bandhavgarh National Park, Madhya Pradesh

This park is known for having the highest tiger densities in the world. So, it is a great place if you are into tiger photography. However, don’t think that the park lacks biodiversity. You will find a variety of flora and fauna, including different bird and mammal species.

An option for a jeep safari is available. There are ancient forts, caves, and tribal villages as well for you to explore. Plan your trip between October and June for comfortable weather.

    • Gir National Park, Gujarat

The park is also a habitat for hyenas, crocodiles, and leopards.  The park is also a paradise for those who enjoy birdwatching. You can experience an open-jeep summary. The safari is guided by naturalists, who will help you spot wildlife.

You will find the park open from mid-October to mid-June. But you are recommended to plan your safari between December and April. The weather remains pleasant, and wildlife comes out of hiding.

    • Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, Kerala

This is a premier destination for spotting wildlife in the Western Ghats. You will have the opportunity to enjoy a safari on a boat along the Periyar Lake. But you can also explore the park in more depth with elephant and jeep safaris, and nature walks.

The sanctuary is famous for the sightings of elephants, gaurs, tigers, leopards, and deer. You will also spot various bird and reptile species. The lush forests and biodiversity of the sanctuary make it a great destination for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts.

The winter months between October and May are considered the best time for safaris and outdoor adventure. But animals are more active and visible during the summer months from March to May.

    • Sundarbans National Park, West Bengal

It is the largest mangrove forest in the world, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The largest population of Royal Bengal Tigers can be found there. These tigers are particularly famous for their amphibious adaptations. You can also find more than 75 species of mangroves.

Tourists can also spot estuarine crocodiles, monitor lizards, and a variety of flora and fauna. Remember that the park can only be explored by boat. Jeep safaris are not available. For the ideal weather, visit during the months between October and February.
