When disaster strikes in Kansas, it instantly turns the lives of affected people upside down. Whether it’s a tornado, flood, earthquake, or crisis, the impact on Kansas individuals, families, and communities can be severe. Homes can be ruined, businesses may shut down, and basic needs can become hard to get. In such a situation, the road to recovery becomes difficult and overwhelming. Fortunately, there are multiple relief programs available for those affected by disasters.

From federal aid to state grants and non-profit assistance, there are multiple grants available to help people rebuild and recover. These grants offer financial assistance to the affected families and individuals to regain stability and move forward. Understanding which disaster relief grants are available in Kansas is the first step toward disaster recovery. In this blog, we will share disaster relief grants in Kansas that can provide financial help after a crisis.

What are Disaster Relief Grants in Kansas?

Disaster relief grants cover the cost of temporary housing, home repairs, lost income, medical expenses, and other important needs. Kansas offers various grants to support those affected. Here are some of the top grants available.

    FEMA Individual Assistance Program

During disasters, FEMA supports affected individuals and families through its Individuals and Households Program (IHP). This program provides essential financial aid and services to those affected by a Presidentially declared emergency or major disaster. It includes funding for temporary housing, home repairs, lodging costs, and other essential expenses that insurance may not cover. Through the Individual Assistance program, FEMA provides both financial and direct support to eligible people to help them recover. Kansasgrants.net offers a range of grant funding opportunities for affected families and individuals to cover financial losses.

    FEMA Public Assistance Program

FEMA’s Public Assistance (PA) program helps communities like state, territorial, etc., and certain non-profits recover from major disasters by providing financial support. This funding covers essential recovery efforts like clearing debris, taking emergency protective measures, and repairing public infrastructure. Typically, the federal government covers 75% of eligible costs, while the remaining 25% is shared between the state, local governments, or other recipients. In certain situations, the federal contribution can be raised to offer extra support and assistance if needed.

    Community Facilities Program Disaster Grants

This program offers funding to support public institutions, nonprofit organizations serving communities, and federally recognized tribes affected by disasters. The grant funding helps rural communities repair essential community facilities affected by Presidentially Declared Disasters. An essential community facility means places that provide vital services needed for a community to function and grow. In addition to essential community facilities, the funding can be used to replace equipment and vehicles damaged by disasters.

U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Disaster Loans

The SBA provides affordable disaster loans to individuals, businesses, and non-profits, helping them rebuild and recover after a disaster. There are 4 different types of disaster loans: physical damage loans, mitigation loans, economic injury disaster loans, and military reservist loans. For this loan, it’s crucial that the area is declared a disaster zone according to SBA’s current disaster declarations. The loan amount can be used for personal property, machinery, inventory, equipment, repair or replace real estate, and business assets damaged in a disaster.

    Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA)

This federal program provides temporary financial assistance to people who lost their employment or self-employment due to a major disaster. One crucial requirement to get financial assistance via DUA is that the individual or family must not be eligible for regular unemployment insurance benefits. Besides that, it is equally important that individuals must be available to work unless they have an injury or are seeking self-employment. It’s important to file an application for DUA within 30 days of the public announcement of its availability.

IRS Disaster Assistance and Emergency Relief

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) provides disaster assistance and emergency relief to individuals and businesses affected by federally declared disasters. It offers special tax provisions to ease the burden and help communities recover from the impact of a disaster. This includes extra time for tax filing, postponement of payment deadlines, claiming deductions for unreimbursed losses, access to retirement funds, and reconstruction of tax records. To qualify, the disaster must be recognized by FEMA as a federal disaster zone.

    State and Local Assistance Programs

In addition to federal aid, Kansas residents may be eligible for state-specific assistance programs. The two most popular agencies are the Kansas Department of Emergency Management (KDEM) and the University of Kansas Emergency Aid Network. KDEM coordinates disaster response and recovery efforts within the state, offering information about grants available. On the other hand, the University of Kansas provides emergency funds to students experiencing unforeseen financial hardships due to disasters. This grant helps remove urgent obstacles that could prevent students from continuing their education.

How to Apply for Disaster Relief Grants?

Determine Eligibility: Eligibility criteria vary by program. Make sure to review the specific eligibility requirements of the assistance program you consider to determine your qualification. It’s important to verify if you are in a FEMA-declared disaster area and ensure you are not eligible for regular state unemployment benefits.

Gather Documents: Every disaster relief grant program requires some important documents to assess your eligibility. Keep the proper documentation of losses and expenses, including photographs of damage, repair receipts, correspondence with insurance providers, etc. Include the documents wherever asked during the application process.

File a Claim: Visit your state’s unemployment insurance website or call their helpline number. If you are denied regular unemployment benefits, request a DUA application. Fill out the form and submit the required documents to prove your eligibility and receive funding.

Deadlines: It’s extremely important to apply for disaster relief grants before the deadline. Therefore, be mindful of the application deadlines for the program you consider. For example, for FEMA, you need to submit applications within 60 days of the disaster declaration.

Be Ready to Work: To receive funding, it’s important that you are ready to work except if you are injured or looking for self-employment. Make sure to report your eligibility for work and inform the agency about any income you earn during the period you receive funding.

    Conclusion

Disasters cause huge losses to lives, property, infrastructure, and economies. For most individuals and families, recovering from the impact of a disaster is a challenging and lengthy process. In such a situation, disaster relief grants play a crucial role in rebuilding and recovery. We have discussed some of the best disaster relief grants and programs in Kansas for the affected people and communities. From the FEMA Individual Assistance Program to State and Local Assistance Programs, there are a number of options available. Just consider your eligibility and needs and choose the right one!
